Robert Hugh Benson AFSC KC*SG KGCHS (18 November 1871 – 19 October 1914) was an English Anglican priest who in 1903 was received into the Roman Catholic Church in which he was ordained priest in 1904. He was lauded in his own day as one of the leading figures in English literature, having written the notable novel Lord of the World (1907). "Oddsfish!" (a title derived from King Charles' favorite epithet) is the last of Benson's historical romances and describes the plots and political movements of the closing scenes of the life of Charles II. Interwoven with the accurately portrayed events and places of the time are fictitious characters, including the narrator, Mr. Roger Mallock and his cousin and lady-love Dolly. Sent by Pope Innocent XI to Charles' court as a diplomatic representative of the Vatican, Mallock becomes a trusted confidant of the King and acts upon Charles's deathbed wish to give his confession to, and receive absolution from, a Catholic priest.

Nineteenth and early twentieth century writers, if they were good, were usually quite good at description and establishing time and place. Benson is one of the good ones. He writes of a time little visited in the imagination, the late 17th century and describes England under Charles II. Particularly, he describes the situation of Catholics and their hope for equal footing with the ruling Protestants. The politics, religious issues, the society are well portrayed. Like most early 20th century writers, Benson's pace is slower than the novelists of today. With patience, the reader will be rewarded.

Oddsfish! Robert Hugh Benson 9781533379191 Books Reviews

I recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a classically written. Benson does such a good job with character development and weaving the story.
A few slow spots but all in all an interesting read.
Although this is not one of my favorite Robert Hugh Benson books, it is, as usual, a wonderful story. Less spiritual than his other books.
Just discovered Robert Hugh Benson has a number of novels. This is the fourth of his books I've read. Fascinating historical story. Highly recommended.
I discovered Lord of the World a couple years ago, was amazed, and decided to see what else this author wrote. Benson is clear and creative in this work, which clearly is not as traumatic as his better-know works. Roman, religion and intrigue make for an engaging and entertaining read.
This is probably the best laid-out and plotted book of Benson's. For a tale of the 17th century, it's got all the "modern" elements of tension and suspense. If it was a "real" book I'd say it was quite a page turner....I guess for the edition it would have to be a screen-tapper or something like that.
This is another splendid book carefully crafted by Fr. Benson, and as another reviewer put it, a real "screen tapper"! This was my fourth Benson novel, and all of them don't just engage, they grab. I liked that this novel is written as a first person narrative, as it gives us all of the main character Roger Mallock, with his youthful doubts, dreams, follies and ideals. He is likeable and wholly believable, a complicated mix of man of action and aesthete. But what shines forth most brightly is Roger's capacity to love, even, and especially, when it is undeserved. But don't think that the above comes at the expense of action--no! There is plenty of suspense, intrigue, tragedy and thrills. Curl up with a cuppa and enjoy the ride.
